How hard is it to change the speed of any GIF?

Sometimes, the seemingly perfect GIF just doesn’t hit the mark. It’s either too slow and takes away from the energy of your reaction or so fast it makes you think “What just happened?”. The solution is, in fact, a simple one: all you have to do is change the GIF speed, and your mood can go from the “This is fine” dog surrounded by flames to Leo DiCaprio’s raised glass in Great Gatsby. Any GIF or meme connoisseur might wonder, however, how hard can it be to change GIF speed?

Sometimes, the seemingly perfect GIF just doesn’t hit the mark. It’s either too slow and takes away from the energy of your reaction or so fast it makes you think “What just happened?”. The solution is, in fact, a simple one: all you have to do is change the GIF speed, and your mood can go from the “This is fine” dog surrounded by flames to Leo DiCaprio’s raised glass in Great Gatsby. Any GIF or meme connoisseur might wonder, however, how hard can it be to change GIF speed?

The right tool

Unless you have time-bending abilities, you’ll definitely need a GIF speed changer. Having to Google “gif speed editor” and coming across all sorts of tools that not only require us to create accounts but also having to download and install them on our computers has become a bit of an ick. We’ve recently come across an awesome online video editor that runs directly in your browser, so you can skip the tedious download & install process: Flixier.

It’s lightning fast, has a built-in file converter, and supports dozens of file types, so you don’t need to worry about file format compatibility. You simply upload your media and start editing. Not only can you change GIF speed with Flixier, but you can also edit GIFs like a pro by adding stickers, effects, transitions– you name it. Besides, you’re not limited to GIFs alone: you can also edit videos and audio tracks, and the best part is that you can turn a video into a GIF and then adjust its speed. How about that? A GIF speed changer and GIF creator, all-in-one.

Let’s go step by step over how to use this handy GIF speed editor as we show you 3 simple methods to change the GIF frame rate like a pro without leaving your browser tab.

Change GIF speed in 3 easy steps

Step 1: Open Flixier and import away

To change GIF speed, you’ll need to go to flixier.com and click the Start Editing button to open up a project. Then, click the Import button, and you’ll be presented with a couple of options. Either upload GIFs directly from your computer or smartphone or bring them over from your Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive accounts. Even better, you can copy and paste an external link from other sources or providers like GIPHY. Last but not least, Flixier offers hundreds of copyright-free GIFs you can edit to your heart’s desire in the Stock media section.

Step 2: Change GIF speed

Drag and drop your GIF on the timeline. You can also make any other edits you’d like, from adding text to animating motion titles or trying out transitions and effects, but that’s for you to explore as you try out Flixier. Here’s how the GIF speed changer works: you select the GIF on the canvas section and then:

  • You head to the right side of the interface, under the Video tab, and you’ll see the Video Speed Drag the slider to the left to slow down a GIF, or drag the same slider to the right to speed up a GIF.
  • Under the same Video Speed section, you’ll see a set of numbers, namely5X, 1X, 1.5X, and 2X. These are preset GIF speed changer settings, and you can simply click them to modify your GIF.
  • In the timeline section, you can see the GIF you’ve brought over. While pressing Shift, simply drag the right edge of the track to the left or right to change the GIF speed.

Step 3: Export your GIF

How hard was it to change the speed of a GIF? Now, all that’s left to do is to save it, so click the Export button and choose the GIF export format. You’ll be able to download your fresh GIF onto your computer, or store it right into your cloud storage accounts, or even share it directly with your friends through Flixier’s social media integrations at the touch of a button.

Should I speed up a GIF or slow down a GIF?

All’s fun and games until you’re sitting there, staring at your screen and wondering what the right choice is. Okay, maybe changing the speed of a GIF isn’t as dramatic as Sophie’s choice, but with the right editing skills… it could be.

One of the reasons you might want to speed up a GIF is comedic value. We know how this sounds, but imagine Michael Scott from The Office doing his little dance at 2x the speed. It would be absolutely hilarious! Besides, some GIFs could really use a little more energy to them, so speeding them up adds a dynamic that completely changes the vibe.

More often than not, you would slow down a GIF for a little dramatic effect and add a mysterious touch. Think of Homer Simpson awkwardly disappearing in the bushes in ultra slow motion to illustrate how you feel. We’ve all pictured it, and since chaotic GIFs are all the buzz now, you know what to do.

There you have it! There’s no right or wrong answer when it comes to choosing how to edit your GIF, as it really depends on the situation, the mood, the content, or even the friend group you plan on sharing it with. The sky is the limit, and creativity knows no bounds when it comes to expressing yourself.
